Professor Kidd confirmed four new deaths were reported in the past 24 hours nationally. "Every death from COVID-19 is a tragedy and these are real people, not statistics," Mr Kidd said. "The first death in Australia from COVID-19 was exactly five months ago on March 1." Australia had 17,280 confirmed virus infections to date with more than 4.2 million tests undertaken. Nationwide, there were 399 people with COVID-19 in hospital, an additional 33 people hospitalised since yesterday including those moved from residential aged care facilities in Victoria. Among those in hospital, 50 people were in ICU - up six on yesterday and 28 reported to be on ventilators - one more than yesterday.
